Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put out a mattress?  One large item (such as a couch/washing machine/mattress) is allowed per week at no additional cost.

Do you accept remodeling and/or construction?  Remodeling and construction items (carpet, drywall, fixtures, etc) typically have an extra cost- please call the office to schedule pickup.  We will not know the extra cost until we get there to analyze what is to be taken.  If we do not have approval to charge for an extra pickup, we will leave the material, as we do not want to surprise you with any extra charges.

How can I recycle paper and cardboard?
If you’re paying for curbside recycling, you can put paper and cardboard 2x2 or smaller into your recycling bin. If you have larger cardboard that 
 
Why didn't they take my freezer? Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers all contain Freon, and are not acceptable for regular garbage pickup because we are not allowed to bring them into the landfill.  As far as we know, you should be able to bring them to North Lapeer Recycling for disposal. Their phone number is  810-793-7557 if you'd like to check with them.
 
Do you accept windows?  We can accept windows, but we cannot be responsible for broken glass on road or driveway.  We will do our best to be careful, but you may have some glass debris to clean up. 

Do you pick up yard waste? We do not.  We are prohibited from bringing it into the landfill with our garbage, and we do not have our own site for composting.

What do I do with old ink cartridges?  They are a health hazard when crushed in the garbage, but you should be able to recycle them at Office Depot.

Do you accept light bulbs?  You can put regular incandescent lightbulbs in the garbage.  However, we cannot accept fluorescent bulbs.  

Can I put paint cans out with the garbage? We can accept water-based paint once it has hardened.  To speed up the drying process, you can mix some kitty litter into leftover paint.  Once it has hardened up, just leave the lids off and put them out with your regular garbage.

Do you take tires? Tires cannot be picked up, as we are not allowed to bring them into the landfill. North Lapeer Recycling (in North Branch)may accept them for a fee.

How do I get rid of hazardous waste? Hazardous Waste cannot be thrown in the regular garbage. Hazardous waste products are cleaners, pesticides, batteries, fuels, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries, oil-based paints, and stains. Contact the Michigan State Extension Office in Lapeer at  810-667-0341 to inquire about hazardous waste clean-up days.
